Alright so I have never had a VPS before and it came with LXAdmin. I installed it without any troubles but now comes the hard part of figuring out the domains and DNS stuff. So I created a DNS Template with: Name: Test IP1: 66.98.210.181 (Default) IP2: 66.98.210.181 (Default) Primary DNS: NS1.BREAKTHEFIREWALL.COM Secondary DNS: NS2.BREAKTHEFIREWALL.COM (Breakthefirewall.com is the site I am adding to the server) I then went to godaddy and put those NS in the custom namserver boxes. However they are not working together... What am I doing wrong? Edit/Delete Message
You have to set up the custom NS at GD before you can use it. I don't recall where the exact link is but it is there. I think it is labeled register a NS. All you are doing is saying ns1.thisdomain . com is located at IP number. Once that resolves in a few minutes you change your NS for the domain to ns1.thisdomain . com
Hey, There is more to it than just registering the nameserver at your registrar. You need to have A records for the NS pointing to the same IP as those are for the nameservers. Once that is done, make sure your DNS server also has NS records (the same ones that is listed at the root servers). Now coming back to registering those nameservers, to know if you have successfully registered those nameservers, go to http://www.internic.com/whois.html. Enter your nameservers (Eg: ns1.domain.com) and then choose "Nameserver (ex. NS.EXAMPLE.COM or 192.16.0.192)" for the radio button field and Submit! If the result shows the IPs you originally registered for the nameservers, then they have been successfully registered - else... you have screwed the whole thing up! Contact GoDaddy for more information. Their support is awesome! They'll get back to you within an hour or so. Best Regards, Ganesh Rao
Ok I got the custom nameservers thing figured out, they are based upon my domains, but now do I set the domain in lxadmin to reflect those nameservers (say for ns1.webmask.info I would use that for godaddy and lxadmin nameservers?)
It has been over a year since I worked wit LX. When you add the domain to the package it will ask you which dns you want to use. If you already have it in the plan you may need to edit the package information. Just tell the system to use the primary dns package, however you set it up. BTW, with LX and godadday I never did any of the things mentioned by ganesh and everything worked just fine.
Ok seeing as I must be a complete idiot and CANNOT figure this out, I'll offer 5 dollars paypal to someone who can get this worked out for me (as my host is "unmanaged")
