I cam across via a sitepro news newsletter. Apparently George Lucas is suing Digg.com for trademark infringement. Says Digg is to close in the name to the video game "The Dig" released out in 1994. You may read more up on it at Trademark War On Digg In the long run I do find it funny, especially since many DPers were banned from Digg a while back.
I suppose i had better remove the gardening tools from my astore then as some of them say they can be used to dig with
I think that there are two possible answers why Lucasfilm is doing this: 1. The lawyers that work for Lucasfilm are trying to look good for their employer by pursuing old intellectual rights and copyrights. 2. Lucasfilm has a sequel to "The Dig" in development that they haven't announced yet and this is an early step to reclaim their use of the 1994 copyright. In either case I still think it's pointless of Lucasfilm to do it, but they have bags of money from Star Wars movies and toys in the company's bank account.
And I came across via your post that Shawn should sue you because this is the COPYWRITING FORUM It has nothing to do with trademark or copyright or trademark issues... *duh*
Well thanks Pat Gael, they took care of it for you and gave me an infraction. Which is fine with me. I can deal with it. It should have been in the Legal section anyways. And if you look at your post, it is considered spam. As well as padding your post count. All you had to do is hit the report post and move along. Think twice before shaking your finger in someones face. I started a thread in the wrong area. You just spammed a post without leaving anything relevant to the original post. So what do you think of the lawsuit? Nonetheless back to topic. I don't think Lucas Films will win the lawsuit.
That got to be the stupidest thing I ever heard... I can't believe that George Lucas is accually sueing digg for that...
then again, a while back a guy whose name is Mike Rowe had to give up domain mikerowesoft.com to microsoft ...
I've never heard of the game, and assumed that Digg was a play on words because .... I can dig it. *shrug* My guess would be its some type of publicity stunt maybe for "the dig 2" or something silly. I mean, 1994? Hah...half the people I know online are not even old enough to remember the game, let alone confuse it with a non-related website. Q
Who knows, I still haven't heard from Namco / Atari. I figured they would be the ones all over the "Digg / Dugg" situation considering their trademark goes all the way back to 1982.
Do they seriously think people can confuse a game from 1994 with a website that's about everything but games?
How pissy. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo would never have been involved in such lame stuff. I think the Sith is working in the legal department.
Not a suprise :-D people goes on and does everything when a company builds up to the top. They want some $$$ from their pockets
I found out about digg.com by trying to find info on the great old movie called 'The Dig' a while back, so I can see where they are coming from... [/sarcasm] gotta be for publicity
This is absolutely rediculous, George Lucas should put an end to this. If Digg hangs in there and fights a good battle, it will probably benefit them with publicity. Lucas Films on the other hand will look very bad in the public eye. People like Digg, and even IF it got inspired by something George Lucas once came up with, that isn´t automatically grounds for an intellectual property infringement case.
