Lower PR on home page than sub pages?

After this recent PR update I have a new site that has gotten it's first green. However, something odd happened... my home page has a lower PR than most of my sub pages that I link to from my home page. I can't figure that one out. You can check out the site if you want - it's the for sale by owner site in my sig.

Any thoughts? Anybody seen this before? I don't really mind other than it would be nice to have the extra co-op weight for a PR 4 site instead of PR 3.

    Hi,

This happened to my directory too at the update before this. Index was an pr4 and the only page that was linked from the index was a PR6. I think it was penalized.

could just be an extra link that points to the sub-page, combined with homepage pr has given it that little extra boost.

Toolbar PR is per page rather than the site as you know so the internal page with higher PR must be better linked to or has a higher quality of links overall, its not uncommon.

I have a similar thing with my "lifestyle management" site in my signature. Its home page PR is 1 but the links page is PR3. All the links i've setup have gone to the home page and i'm not aware of any links to any subpages let alone the links page.

This is an anomaly that started appearing in Google some months back. I'm not sure what caused/causes it to happen and I've yet to see an explanation that makes any sense to me. My guess is that it's something to do with how the URL is formed in your backlinks. For example, the Toolbar PR for my psychology forum is different depending on whether I go to www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb or www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb/ or www.psychlinks.ca/phpbb/index.php -- on other forums, especially vBulletin forums like Joeychgo's forum, I see differences between www.vbwebmaster.com/forums/index.php and www.vbwebmaster.com/forums/index.php?

Bottom line: Forget about Toolbar PR and focus on SE rankings. And if you must stress about PR, try to ensure that all your backlinks are precisely uniform.

I have had this happen to many sites, not only in this update, but past updates.

I had this as well. And if im not mistaking it is a kind of penalty i think. Remember bluefind, the directory a while back ago. They had the same. High pagerank on the internal pages but the homepage dropped, same thing happened to their forum. On my website i had the same.

I don't think so. I saw it reported for a number of sites that were clearly NOT penalized. The fact that it may have also happened to a few sites that had incurred some sort of penalty is coincidental, IMO.

Minstrel, I think your theory is probably closest to the truth. Whatever the cause I'm not too concerned - just found it interesting. Focusing on SE rankings and traffic is far more important than the PR of my pages, for sure. The extra co-op weight would be nice, that's the only bummer.
