Great pAbout blending ads though I have found through testing that some of my sites are have a higher CTR with ads that stick out like a sore thumb.

Just goes to show that you need to test everything

GlennDorsey has some good points there.

I would like to add another possibility why some AdSense publishers are seeing low CTRs and CPCs. It has something to do with SmartPricing and those that experience low CTRs and CPCs may have been slapped by Google because their sites or blogs receive bad traffic.

How do you define bad traffic?

Take a look at Google AdSense policies and TOS. If you look carefully, you can see that Google hates AdSense publishers that participate in traffic exchange programs.

Why do Google hates traffic exchange program?

Because it is bad traffic! It is not generated out of pure interest! Advertisers hate bad traffic and they have asked Google to look after their advertising campaigns and make sure that their investments are not wasted on bad traffic.

Lesson to be learned here today

Never ever get involved with traffic exchange programs. Nuff said! :)

    Thanks!

    Thanks!

No doubt. There are no absolute rules to any of this. In niches that traditionally have a very low ctr, ads that just blare at you can do really well.

Smart Pricing is a result of poor conversion on the advertiser's end. Yep, it's just bad traffic in most cases from Stumble, etc.

Thank you for a well thought discussion there mate [to the OP]. Amazingly I do belong in the < 3% CTR dudes, but because my sites are so vast and niches all over the place that their total CTR average is just so lame, but I do have sites that have 10% CTR which racked in a few big moolahs.

But me I just like to diversify.

Thanks anyways OP you remind me of Joel Comm lol

Yeah, I have some crappy ctr sites 2. lol That's another good point actually. Sites that are scattered (not 1 central theme) will usually have a lower ctr as the visitors will not be as focused.

    Joel Comm? lolol :p

    very nice info glenndorsey :)

Believe me or not i was about to post the same observed facts by me but u posted first :p

The one thing i want to add is the tech, webmaster and programming niche is non high money yielding niche...
why..? simply because the people reading these are some what technically skilled and many will have all kinds of ad blockers in their browser and even if they haven't they are too lazy to click the ads..

I believe that the non tech niche(ex: personality development, blogging, health, finance(it's best niche IMO) etc.,) will yield high income when compared to their tech counterpart....

So what do u guys feel about my above points...?

Thanks. Webmaster niche can really be tough just because they don't click ads. As far as ad blockers go... good point. SO many niches can do great that it's just hard to say. Much of it really just depends on your traffic. Give me some solid traffic and I can do well with any niche.

    Great pointers though!

    Thank you very much.

WOW! One of the best articles I have EVER read about Adsense. Thank you so very much! (My biggest site by far is a martial arts site. The CPC and CTR is so low I recently removed all the Adsense ads since I consider them a total waste of time and space... less than 5% CTR and 0.05 clicks. Sadly even my best niche sites now get low CPC although the CTR can be much more. Sometimes I have CTR of 18-25%, but my money is really jacksh*t. It is rare to see more than 0.20 a click tho' one site gets a few 0.45 or so.

Excellent tips and insight from someone who clearly is speaking from experience.

The following tip is the one that makes me the most money with Adsense, but is not taken seriously by most people who are trying to be successful with their site. They somehow don't want to believe that it's true because it kind of goes against the grain of building a quality web site. You can build quality content that doesn't quite satisfy your visitors, such that they have a reason to want to click ads for more. Content that completely satifies will not get a high CTR.
