2.50 CPM is pretty much in the industry standard range if you are advertising on a reputable site. The main big New Zealand sites usually charge between $2.90 and $7.00 CPM for advertising. I think CPM advertising is usually better for building a brand whereas CPC advertising on search engines is better if you want to sell something right then, as users are already in the "search mood".

I think the main issue in your case is not the CPM, but the click thru rate. You have a CTR of 0.001%. This is very low, by any standard. It is usually possible to get a CTR of 0.5% - 1%. It gets tougher after that though. I would suggest the following to improve the CTR:
    1. Ensure that the sites you advertise on are related to your field, so that more people would be interested in what you offer.
    2. Create a catchy ad with some eye-catching graphics.
    3. Use an animated GIF for a higher CTR.

I usually try several sites and weed out the ones like the one that gave you 5 clicks for 3400 impressions. I look at the sites that Google offers up and pick the ones that look like they'dm have a common audience with mine. The best site I've found has geek in the title like my site that has geek in the title.

Can you mention what niche you are in? Some of us may know good sites to site target.

Where's that number from? Based on everything I've seen $2.50/CPM on a "decent" site is a steal...

Based on what I pay for marketing my company's websites here in New Zealand. You can pay around NZD5.50 ~ USD3.85 for advertising on www.nzherald.co.nz on the home page. This is the site for a major newspaper in New Zealand, with around 1.2 million ad impressions per month. In December, advertising here was available at half the price (less than USD2.00). Other opportunities are also available for similar prices. I would have thought that advertising on US sites would be even cheaper due to more competition.

I need to move to New Zealand:D

Just as an example, I ran a small test CPM campaign via AdWords on digitalpoint and it was closer to $4/CPM if I remember correctly.

    Yes, you should! :D

Re Adwords, you must have been targetting competitive keywords. Our average CPC for Google Adwords (for work sites) is around 4c per click and CTR is 2.5%, so CPM works out to be around $1. I am sure there are advertisers out there who pay a few dollars per click and if they are to calculate their CPM it could even be over $100!

Nope, it was a site targeted CPM campaign not a keyword based campaign.
