Low cost affiliate program options?

I'm very interested in developing an affiliate program for our site, but the options we've looked at so far are fairly costly to get started. It's something we definitely want to do in the future, but our budget is pretty tight at the moment.

In the meantime, we've setup our order form with a field labeled "Promotional Code", and our sales people are all assigned unique promo codes so we know who referred who. To ensure that the customers are using the promo code, we're offering them $5 off their order with a valid promo code.

Is this something that could be done effectively online? How would I promote such a thing, since it doesn't really conform with your traditional affiliate program? I'm sure people would be interested in something like this, just not sure where to start.

(For those interested, we pay 7% of the purchase price to the referrer, and since our orders average in the $300+ range, it's a healthy piece of change!)

    Thanks!

Yeah, it's not a bad alternative at all, just wish I could do it without the one-time setup fee.. :D

Have you any experience with them? Pros/cons, etc?

You can setup Ultimate Affiliate on your server for $200 from http://www.groundbreak.com/

It is a nightmare to setup, but once running is pretty good. Only recommended if you are willing to get your hands dirty technically.

I think the 2% that ShareASale charges is probably worth it to avoid the headache of setting up Ultimate Affiliate. I could probably do it (I do IT for a living), but I've got about 30 different things going on at the moment, doubt I have the time to learn something new. But thanks for the info..

I hear alot of stuff about MyAffiliateProgram, but I've never gotten a clear read on their cost - Can anyone break it down for me? Thanks!

2 big questions to ask are:
    1) Do you want to have an in-house program or network (where there are affiliates who will sign up, checks get taken care of etc.) There is a trade-off in cost and control.
    2) If in-house you can get a hosted solution or install a package on your own server.

Then there are affiliate features in shopping carts, website builder systems, mlm software too.
