I'm wondering if anyone would please sign this petition. She has been a good mother, but the court wants to take her children away simply because she has cancer.
Thanks for your comment, Carol. I think she needs the children, and they need her. For the court to rip them away, as if she has already died - it's an outrage. How do any of us know how long we will live, anyway. Please don't believe that W3bmaster. In some cases you're right, but it's not always true. I was involved in a campaign a few years back, and the petition made all the difference. It was very unlikely that we would have had the positive outcome we did, without a public outcry. I've seen it work. Every signature matters. This petition will be sent directly to the Governor of North Carolina.
Good luck pursuing this - it sounds unbalanced and unjust. You need to get press releases out and find someone who is confident with the press to act as a family spokesperson. I'd be contacting all local politicians and even going to talk show hosts like Oprah to see if you can get any traction. You need a facebook page and you need NOISE. The courts do not like to be embarrassed.
So unjust. The court decision wasn't based on any negligence on the mother's part, it was based on the fact she had been diagnosed with cancer. If this stands, it seems anyone that has ever been diagnosed with cancer could be in danger of having their children taken away. Sarahk -- Excellent ideas! The situation was actually emailed to me by a friend. To make sure I don't overstep my bounds, I'm going to personally email Alaina's sister (starter of the petition). Certainly, I don't think she would mind - but say, if we started a Facebook page, she may prefer to have control over it. I feel very strongly about this, and would make the time to pursue it. I think it's important.
