Make captcha on, it will help you.

    No it wont.

Standard captcha is useless against spam bots, that code was broken years ago. Even with Captcha and email verification, your only going to slow the spammers down a few seconds.

The only captcha phrase that even slightly works, is ReCaptcha.

No it won't. reCAPTCHA got broken as well. That's the fundamental advantage of having a Q&A-based system, since you're making the questions, and hopefully, you'll make some unique question.

It is also a good idea to block proxy servers from accessing or at least registering on your site. Some problems can also be solved by blocking countries that are the source of spam registrations.

I figured it was just a matter of time before spammers broke recaptcha. That might explain why the level of spam on my forum has been going up a little bit every month.

What I switched to a few weeks ago was SolveMedia Widget Verification - kinda like captcha, but a little different. But I do not know if SolveMedia supports MYBB or not.

vBulletin got hit in the spam influx much harder than MyBB did. Then again, they have only begun to start doing things right as of late.

There are mods which now check how much time registration is taking bots aree fast so they get stopped there itself

That is true and is the best kind of protection at the moment.

For now I would recommend you use the Question & Answer based system available for download in the MyBB MODs section, also I wouldn't recommend that you use StopForumSpam as some legitimate users have been flagged there for no reason at all, which is very weird.

For that, you just don't check usernames, and you should be fine. If a bad guy registers as "Stevenhead" and by coincidence, someone else registers as "Stevenhead," then that's why that problem exists.
