My domain name expired a about 80 days back. For various reasons i gorogot to renew it right away and only realised when it stopped working; this was about 30 days after it expired.

At this point i went into Netfirms control panel to renew but it will not let me, it says its back in the registray and i need to pay $150 to get it out. I was under the impression that x days after a domain expires it becomes open for the public again to purchse; this one hasn't it is still showing me as the whois owner. Im not paying $150 to get it back.

Anyone seen this problem before, how did you sort it?

    Thanks
    Carl

Yes there will be a deletion period within which you will able to renew the domain...

But Deletion period depends upon the Registrars...

Also Thanks for your question reminded me one of my domains that is going to expire ,I am going to renew it soon

I'm betting mobilbuzz is right - I've seen too many companies scam domain expiration - they take ownership and make you pay a hostage release fee to get it renewed. It's a rip-off big time, and should be outlawed but unfortunately is legal.

So if it's parked, you'd have to pay that insane fee.

HOWEVER - if you can show that the domain is a copyright based domain somehow - you can petition ICANN. Tough road to go though.

If and when you get it released, go to a place like GoDaddy.com and have it transferred. this has to be done at least 30 days before the next expiration though.

And if you try to have it transferred after it's released, but come to find out that you can't it's because the company that is doing this to you made themselves the registrant permanently. And THAT deserves a wall of shame monument for those unfair tactics on their part even worse than the $150 hostage release fee.
