Lost most links from 'Links to site' report in Webmaster tools

I've noticed that I've lost all but a couple of the links to my site in the 'Links to site' report in Webmaster Tools'.

Now obviously it doesn't really matter too much as all my links still exist on the web - just interested to see if anyone else has experienced this?

Links to that sites are reduced because the sites which are linking probably got punished by google panda update 2.2 and that is why the link of your site in their page is not cached and indexed in google's index pages ... That is why the links to the sites are reduced

Thanks for your reply. That's not the reason, though. I'm not talking about poor quality links from content farms - don't have any of those. Only have good quality, naturally built links and these have all disappeared from the report overnight.

As I said in the first post, it's no big deal. The links to my site are still there on the web and the SERPs are the same. Was just interested to know if anyone had seen something similar.

I've seen a few people on Google forums saying the same thing and they seem to say the links usually come back after a few days.

Ours too. But I think it will be back since we have also experienced the same thing in the past, in the case of our sitemap URL, where GWT shows less URL but return back after some days.

Great, thanks. Will leave it a few days and check if they're back.

This happened because Google webmaster tools never display your actual backlink count. Use, Yahoo! Siteexplorer for checking your backlinks.

In some cases Google devalues low quality backlinks and thus you cannot see them in webmaster tools.

Another reason for this is placement of nofollow attributes, if websites are placing nofollow attribute, this will kill your backlinks.
