I lost a good site wide link for one of my sites 10 days ago and in the last 4 days my traffic is down by 90% nothing else has changed.

I lost rankings for all my major keywords and tailenders.

Do you think this could be a penelty by google? ie google getting an impression that it was a paid link?

Now just in case I lost rankings due to that lost site wide link, now that I have got it again do you think I would get my old rankings back and if yes how soon and if no ... why?

Any suggestions will be most welcome.

I am not sure one link will make that much difference. Part of the reason could be that the update is going on and everything is up and down. 90% traffic lost seems a lot. Where so you get your traffic? From that one link or from search engines?

That link didint send me any traffic but the link I am talking about was as relevant a link could get to my site.

All the traffic from google is almost gone.Traffic was 3000+ uniques a day 3 days ago and now its down to 300-400 :(

It does seem rather quick for google to respond to your loss of those links within a week. Still, losing links can certainly hurt you in the serps.

If the loss of rankings was due to the link then you will get them back once the link is reinstated.

There are a lot of weird things going on, I would wait till the dust of the update setttles then see what happens. I don't see Google reacting to one link taht fast but anything is possible. I would keep trying to build links on good sites and not count on one link. If you lost it and got it back, it doesn;t seem reliable, look for other more reliable links.
