Losing out big to non-optimized sites

    Allinachor:keyphrase My site #10 of 84,900
    Allintitle:keyphrase My site #10 of 89,500
key phrase not in top 1,000 of 240,000,000

I can't even find out how bad it is, because all I can tell is...not in top 1000.

Now, I only have PR 2 and a couple hundred anchor texts, many from my sig link (detectives can figure out what site)...but how can a site which is in top #10 among anchor/title included pages not be in the top 1000?!!!
Am I victim of an overoptimizing penalty, or is this just a time lag, or is the competition really that stiff? After all, it looks like only a few sites are really optimizing for this phrase, the rest just have the term often on the page.
About how many anchor links would it take to get to the second or third page? Or is that the wrong approach?

Is this keyword out of reach, or do I just need to keep spreading those links?

update: Four word keyphrase in sig: 307 of 76,000,000

Nothing is out of reach. Someones gotta be on that first page eh?

Keep gaining links. Try press releases, articles & directories.

Remember to vary your anchor text slightly too

Okay, this one really bugs me.
    For the three-term keyword above:

Word1Word2 Word3: Mysite at #7 of 3,250,000. Yeah! Great. First Page!

Word1 Word 2 Word3: Mysite is not there in the top 1000 of 118,000,000. I looked at the whole damn list.

What's worse, the site at #10 for the first search where I beat them by a couple slots, is only #21 for the second search.

The only difference is a space...and I don't think I use the spaceless phrase anywhere. The only reason I saw this is
I accidentally typed it that way and was shocked to see my site on page one, since I haven't been ranking for any variation of this phrase.

Is Google just bound and determined not to give me this keyword? This starting to look like a Sandbox. How can I check on this?

Update: over the last few hours, it looks like the site has been completely dropped from the index....Aaaargh!

    Hi

I might be missing something but what is the URL of the site you are trying to SEO?
