I have a dedicated server with a few sites running on it. i have way to many connections and the sites continually get bogged down. want to convert to lighthttpd. if you have experience in this please pm me with a price to convert my server and make sure all my sites work on it. thanks jay
If you are using whm/cpanel then apache is your only choice. whm does not support lighttpd. lighttpd does not support some common apache features like htaccess files. Support for url rewriting is limited to main conf file of lighttpd. If your sites depend on these features, they may not work under lighttpd. Setting up statistics softwares with lighttpd is another big task. Still want to migrate? BTW, I am not against using lighttpd, its a good software but an average webmaster cannot manage it.
Hello If you are using cPanel, then LiteSpeed will be the best choice. Benchmark prooved that litespeed is better than even lighttpd and much much better than Apache. Their website is , www.litespeedtech.com Litespeed supports apache's configuration file, httpd.conf, so that if you are using apache, then it is very easy to switch to litespeed without any modification in your files. Many features are there like DDOS protection etc , But, the software is not free, it is paid. You can try a 14 days full featured version by getting a trial license from their website which is free. If you need help in installing, please contact me , I can install it for you for a reasonble price . We are using LiteSpeed on our 3 servers. Edit : LiteSpeed will work very well with cPanel / WHM , Apache httpd.conf , Mod_rewrite rules , Mod_security . .htaccess etc Regards Vivek www.SunTexHosting.com
I Second the suggestion for LiteSpeed (http://www.litespeedtech.com) - we have used in on many cPanel and other servers with great success. It will even read Apache's config files, so it's a very easy conversion. Contrary to the post above, there is a free version of litespeed available, however it has some restrictions which may cause it to not work for you.
The difference between LiteSpeedTech and lighty are negligible 99% of the time - and the only cases where it would be wise to choose LiteSpeedTech's server over all of the alternatives is if you're a commercial company (even then most commercial companies choose free alternative with load balancing, proxy servers, etc..). Stick to lighty . That being said - hit me up if you still need help
If you have cPanel server, then stick with LiteSpeed. Changing from Apache to lighttpd (cPanel server) is a very very bad idea.
There are many ways to solve this and completely switching to lighthttp is a bad idea unless you don't require the functionality of Apache. A few possibilities are: - Configuring Apache to provide better performance (disabling unneeded modules, disabling performance absorbing featuers, etc.) - Load balancing (static files from external server (or CDN), server load balancing (via DNS/Load balancing hardware) - Optimizing your files and scripts
thanks everyone for your responses. what seemed to be the major issues is that the site was bogging down with too many connections. so far what ive done... installed limit conn. and set to 10 per IP increased connections to 420 so far things are better with those changes.
Or perhaps external websites were using your content/services and causing this trouble, blocking these IP addresses is also a possibility if you don't allow this kind of service.
i dont allow that service. the site is a video site but i dont give embed code or anything like that.
I see, mod_access is your friend. Put in your .htaccess: Or you can add it in your httpd.conf file in the <Directory /path/to/your/webroot></Directory> part
If you want to prevent your videos from loading on another website you can do this by calling your videos via a script and checking the HTTP_REFERER variable, this adds one more layer of protection and automatically prevent most websites from loading your videos.
