You can use adword campaign of the google to drive traffic to your site. But when you stop the campaign, the traffic stops instantly. The best thing is to get search engine traffic by optimizing your site.

Consider adwords, banner ads on sites relevant to your niche, or holding a contest giving away a nice prize. Agree with dairyman, search traffic is free once you put the work in to earn it!

 

I really wouldn't go with buying traffic. Why? I think most of the time it's money going down the drain unless you really know what you're doing. In addition, it brings with it a lot of stress due to the fear of losing your money. My point is, why not get free traffic? Free traffic can just be even of more quality then paid ones and it's relatively risk-free comparing to buying traffic. Even though, I'm not against buying SEO services for example but I'm against buying 'hits', I think it's just not effective unless you can guarantee that they are laser-targeted and also guarantee that you'll at least get some conversions to bring you your money back which is very hard.

Uhhhh, ad networks (buying traffic) do that too.

 

I have tried adengage and adbrite. Most of the time, the traffic they bring just dont convert. You are better off sticking to adwords.
