I do not know any other site! It seems those are the only unique directories.

Don’t count on submitters to make 1 unique description for each directory, it’s your job to guarantee that yours is unique.

How many results deem a site as being unique? when I plugged in my directory it kicked back 6 results with 85% of them being from a featured listing on my home page.

 

90% of directory submissions descriptions are crap

“buy now and get 2 for free” ; “buy now cheap pills, inexpensive pills, affordable pills”

 

If it’s on the same site, doesn’t count. If you are being scrapped doesn’t count also, go and to google webmaster and point the scraper site.

 

You should test inside pages, not home pages, the best ones to benchmark are the "latest" and "top hits" pages.
Because they have content from several inside pages mixed.

1. You have to submit your site with unique description field to each and every directory.

And also

2. You have to change/modify ever description field of each and every site submitted to your directory.

Its hard to manage if you have more than one directory or free directory.

No doubt, you really worked hard to make ask-dir quite different from other general directories.

 

Original content is essential for the longevity of a directory. This should be the basis of all directories that start up as it is what will end up separating the quality from quantity.

The duplicate content penalty is more than a paranoid directory owner's nightmares. The more search engines tweak their algos, the more they will penalize.

May I get clarification on your definition of uniqueness. For instance: there are no original 3-5 word phrases left to write in the English language. I rewrite my descriptions for featured listings and don't show the description for free ones. Sadly, my front page fails the copyscape text because I quote (with credit) Google's webmaster's guidelines in my manifesto.

Correct, but just because you are penalized does not make your site banned. It just discredits some of your popularity. What this will probably do is make your links pass PR but not much theming value (which is what makes good SERPs).

News sources are a bit different as posting the news & distributing feeds is what they do. Our directories are much different category than newspapers, don't you agree.

To clarify, I don't think content needs to be 100% original as there are no original phrases left to write. 95+% should be good enough to pass any filters that the engines might set up.

I don't believe a directory can have an original content, just not possible, you can brag about it now, but google will one day get your "original" content

 

Submitters some time don’t notice this, but if you go see the listing of Trincas at http://ask-dir.com/Directories/Paid-with-Free-Options/ you will see that is different from what you submitted and 100% unique no other web page as this content.

For directories is very hard work I get several an there is not much unique things to talk about .

 

Right on the nail, if search engines implement a harder duplicated content policy, 99% of directories will be pushed to “supplemental results” or have the pages de-cached.

 

I don't believe this BS. I can show you examples of a PR9 Directory that has duplicate content description yet its not penalized. This is totally crap and people just putting weight that their site is the best. C'mon !! Everyone is unique. I can type you the description of my sites in English Spanish and Japanese.... That does make me unique

I think(maybe I am wrong), a 200-300 description field wont be treated as "substantial blocks of contents" by the search engines.

 

My directory strives to be 100% unique, and take a look at Ask detail pages (SevenSeek; Easy Find Directory) still "don't belive a directory can have an original content".
