Where do you (a web designer) go to look for work? I know a few so if you like please give any stories (good or bad) about using them.

    2. Odesk

Start banging on doors in your local business area. Tell them that you are very responsive, and will make simple changes within a half an hour of their request. Or they will have their own frustrations with their current situation, and you will have an opportunity to say "I can help."

It may be more comfortable to sit in front of your computer hoping that a freelance site will bring you a living, but you have a big advantage in your local market, not in the worldwide market.
