Hi there, I am in the process of trying to set up a directory and running into problem after problem... most stemming from my lack of knowledge. I have tried two free versions of directory softwares, uploaded them to my GoDaddy server, changed the file permissions as instructed and still cannot get passed the first screens. If anyone knows of one that literally is plug and play I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,
Is GoDaddy not a good host? I have had compatability problems with them before but always just figured it was myself not doing things right.
Godaddy and other Big corps are usually "out of touch"....I probably need to elaborate on that...But to simply answer your question..No! Godaddy is not good for hosting sites like directories.
Indexscript (indexscript*com)will work on godaddy hosting put you will have to PM the admin in their forums to get the correct .htaccess file. The default one will not work. I may have a copy on my hard drive if the admin is away for the holidays. You may PM me here if that is the case. The install will be 100% painless if you can read the simple instructions and follow them. The other posters are correct it is your choice of hosts that is most of the problem.
Thanks for the suggestions, phplinkdirectory was the first one I tried, had absolutely no luck with that just kept getting blank page after blank page showing up, even after replacing one of the files they suggest you replace when using GoDaddy. I wil check out IndexScript to see what it is all about, but in the mean time can anyone give me a few of the pros and cons of using a script as opposed to simply hand doing each page yourself? I mean the only program I am technically inclined to use is GoDaddy... but I am thinking I may be be just as well off to simply do that. All entries would be hand entered by myself anyways, so does anyone else think this is a reasonable option?
It has been awhile since I looked, but you might take a look at tolra as I think if you host through them they may do the install. Oh btw here is what I think of GoDuddy.....
Godaddys web host plans are more tailored for basic HTML sites as opposed to scripts and CMS based sites.
