There are 5 key factors in email marketing: 1) Deliverability. Are your mail servers whitelisted? 2) CAN-SPAM compliance, or bullet proof hosting. You need step 1 either way. 3) Click tracking. You need to track open rates and click rates. 4) Subject line and split-testing. You need to try small batches with different subject lines to find the one with the highest open rate. 5) Style of email and use of proper copywriting.
