    Hi I am working for a website design company and have been placed in charge of marketing.....I am looking for some pros and cons of Directory submission

    I feel this would be our best step in achieving more traffic... as we will get more back links to our site, but the powers that be are stalling.....has any one any ideas that will make them see sense....or maybe a report on the pros and cons of Directory submission

    Thanks

    Steve

    Inbound links can't hurt. There aren't really any cons. Maybe if you were to pay for a submission and then google later stripped the directory of its PR.

    As far as free submission there's no real downside except time consumption. As far as paid directories downside is money.

    You won't lose traffic, and can only gain really as far as inbound links.

    Pro= traffic
    Con= time & money

    BTW the "traffic" isn't from the directories it's from search engines that are manipulated by directories.

    High PR is subjective but many high ranked quality sites have high PR as they have been around a good time and have been well supported and promoted

    But there is quality on the way up too, so it is important that you are selective and get value added sites that you submit to

    The directory should have a high PR. Some directories will take forever to include your link but once approved its a more permanent backlink. So longer time to get your backlink compensated with permanence.

    You want the cons. Well since Google can't penalize your site for who links to you, I guess the only cons are the time and/or money you spent to get listed.

    It's obvious that you should get a link from web design sites. This is even a better value than a link from a general directory.

    If you want links from directories, go for PR. Like you said, directories won't give you any traffic. So what other reason you need to submit your link to a directory?

    Unless being listed on Yahoo! Dir or Dmoz;

    web design sites or webmaster sites > web design only directory > general directory > everything else
