Unless you sign a contract, you own all the rights. What you understand has no legal standing. So, if the original poster were to have a chance to resell the article for a lot of money, if you haven't signed a contract, you would have a claim on that money. Also, if you don't have a contract, you can resell the material elsewhere.

Now, most people here don't bother, and most people just do a quick job for someone and forget about it, but this poster wants to be a bit more professional about it.
