Doorway pages are basically just search engine landing pages. In the past they became known as a form of spam as some websites would setup hundreds of doorway pages each optimized for a particular keyword. These pages typically were hidden on a website. They were meant to redirect users to another page on their site. You can still make landing pages, but ensure they are linked from within your site.
Yes, doorway pages are just a "portal" type site that ultimately takes you to your actual site. They are certainly still used, but some say that Google looks down upon them. Also, many quality link directories don't allow you to link to them.
doorway pages can be legit too actually any page that is optimized for a keyword can be considered a doorway page, as long as there isn't anything tricky about it
A better way of thinking of a doorway page, is look at your site and build pages based on your product. Example say your selling hats. Ok' now this gets into onpage seo, but leads into what doorway pages were meant to do. "be very keyword targeted". So your homepage is based on the keyword "hats", lets say. And your next page keyword is baseball hats & ball caps, and your next page the keyword is 'team baseball caps" and so on. This works because, one your site is about hats and when a user goes to your targeted keyword page they land exactly on the page their looking for. And most times you will start to find long-tail keywords that have a fair amount of people searching for them. And you can get rankings pretty easy for these long-tail keywords when you build targeted product pages. Don't forget Google loves fresh new content....
STAY AWAY FROM DOORWAY PAGES please see google webmaster guidelines, although it may take awhile to find you, once they do there is a good chance you'll be blacklisted. If you want better listings use ethical and white seo techniques they are so much more effective.
