I am so new at this and I have a failry new site. Everytime I turn around someone is trying to sell me something that will supposedly help drive traffic but nothing seems to be working. What can I do on my own to help.

Start by using one of the many free web directory lists out there. Submit your site to them with variations of the keywords of your site. These are easy links to get.

Also spend some time contacting other webmasters and asking for a link. These are harder to get but usually more valuable. And most importantly be patient. It takes time for Google to recognize your link building efforts.

Yes. Aaron Wall recommends that you start by submitting you site to these 4 directories(he may have mentioned a couple of others, but this is a start):

    dmoz.org (free - can take a while)
    joeant.com($40)
    skaffe.com($45)
    web-beacon.com($40)

If you can't pay for them, then apply to become an editor.

Just getting into Dmoz helped me greatly. Look around here on DP and read. Do follow blogs with useful comments are good. Creativity helps too. Keep at it you can do it.

I had compiled a list here http://nbridges.com/tips. You should find it helpful. Check for my similar thread on DP too.

And if you want, find someone who can submit your content to article directories. I offer the service (click the last link in my sig), butt there are tons of others who do the same. I think article marketing is really a great way to get links and to increase your SERPs.

    100% wrong.

why u wanna distribute own content on article dirs for cheap links, and if you are using this tactics never suggest to any newbie, as it can not work as much as the article published on your website.

You can always add back links by going to blogs & commenting, however, I have to disagree.. This isn't always a good tactic, while it builds links the quality isn't very high. But, it adds to numbers.. So, take that for what it is worth.

Actually, you can find high pagerank internal blog pages fairly easily. I don't think a PR4 backlink is worthless anywhere.
