I have just installed elgg 1.0 and its extremely impressives - except there is alot of template manipulation needed, as well as removing some information. The Pages/bookmark functionality is great and same to the groups component. Having said that - joomla is just as good (MINUS the pain of inserting images)... Worth a look, and its free.
IMHO the best social networking web 2.0 script is Dzoic Handshakes, see it in my sig. If you want a solid network, then forget the free CMS hacks. Your site will crumble with 100 users online at a single time. Dzoic can handle it easy! Good luck, G
