This is quite common in all forums, we need to moderate the forum continuously. Approve the new accounts after moderation to stop spam bots.
spammers are everywhere. I suggest to have a verified email accounts and if possible, accept only corporate emails. hope this would help.
You can add a substantial amount of moderators to your forum to stop spamming. They can be dedicated only to moderate forum postings.
It's never ending. The more popular the site the more spam. You can block some, but they usually just find ways around it. Same goes for blogs they can be spammed like crazy too. Mostly they are looking for dofollow links. If you change from dofollow attribute to nofollow you can do away with a lot whether it be forum, blog or any other site. Post that for your visitors to see. But then a lot of you regulars can disappear too. So it's a tough thing. You just need to test.
do not allow to update signature before 50 posts. agree with gameutopa, dofollow attribute to no follow is best solution.
To stop spam in forum you have to check the forum for every hour (depends on the traffic to your forum, you can vary the time gap) and you have to delete spamming posts & ban the users who are spamming.
i usually use generated images for verification.. but in a worse case scenario you have to start banning ip addresses.
All the forums got spammer, you can stop them. The only thing you can do is moderate closely or hire more moderator to help
