looking for a good text based code editor

I'm hoping that some of you all will have some suggestions for a text based code editor that supports asp tags and can do a global search and replace among files in a folder on my hard drive. I used to have something that would do this many years ago, but I can't remember what it was called.

    Thanks

Try http://ultraedit.com or do a google search for crimson editor. Ultraedit is my favorite. It's got tabbed windows; and can open *huge* files.

Crimson Editor has been working pretty good for me. I like that it can do the same global search & replace in folders the same way BBEdit can.

I'm currently using TextPad. I won't attempt to list all its features but I rarely find anything that I can't do with it and am often surprised at some of the things I can do with it.

One more vote for ultraedit. I must've converted thirty users to ultraedit over the years. It's solid. I've edited multi-gigabyte files with it, and i've had over 100 files open at a time at times. Also, they have ultra-compare which works well with wincvs. I have a buddy who uses textpad and loves it.

Ultraedit has a syntax file, so it will support any number of programming languages for text highlighting. There are a ton of premade sets available on the website for obscure things like PL/SQL and COBOL. It saves/opens directly to ftp if you want, and it has a file search and replace function that I've used to edit the footer on an 80,000 page html documentation set without a problem. It doesn't use regular expressions, which was good for me back in the day since I haven't always known them. It has it's own "expression set" which is pretty simple and documented well in the help file. You can consider that a plus or a minus. It also does "preview in browser", allows you to configure external commands to menu items, works as a hex editor, does a find in files - where it lists out the specific occurences in files and you can double click to go to that line in a file, has a "column mode" editing mode for when you have to insert the same text on a bunch of consecutive lines, lets you define function syntax for languages and provides you with a list of functions, and optionally will let you place a cursor beyond lines end with the mouse. Oh yeah, and converts well between unix and windows text files (you know - the ^M type things).

I am with Bob. I have been using TextPad for years and I am still finding new features. It can do search/replaces on a number of files like you were asking.

LOL. It's the one piece of shareware I've ever bought and felt good about. I use it for pretty much everything, so I suppose I've officially achieved evangelist status.

hrmm.. nobody else uses AceHTML 5.0 freeware?

Habits are hard to change but if nobody speaks up for this one, I think that I'll bend and break under severe group preassure and look into one of the more popular ones.

Ultraedit I have only heard good things about ever, but found that I had to pay for it... I have this stupid principle that i want to make money (or try to) before I start spending. Otherwise the bad guys out there will bleed me dry fast ;)

If you're looking for a text-only freeware editor, I would highly recommend Crimson Editor (review here).

If you want something still free but with a lot more bells and whistles, HTML-Kit comes highly recommended, with numerous free plug-ins to further enhance the basic editor.

LOL, I've only just downloaded HAPedit and I'm astounded that the guy gives this away as freeware. I was just going to post announcing it's existence when I thought I'd better do a search on the forum to see if it was already being discussed.

Have you set it up so it can compile your php and work with mySQL? If so, how easy is it? I'm looking at doing it over the next few days.
