    Hi guys,

I'm looking for a descent HTML / text editor. Pref. one that also uses highlighting and supports diff. languages (php, ...)

I used to work alot with dreamweaver, but lately I find myself only using the coding part of it, combined with notepad.

Some browsing of the web has turned up the following three:

    http://www.crimsoneditor.com/
    http://www.alleycode.com/
    http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage3.shtml

Anyone that has experience with these three?
I hate downloading stuff from the web, so much evil out there, and the fact that I'm pretty paranoid about trusting unknow software.

Or anything else you can recommend as a descent, no malware-evil-spammy program?

I'm using PSPad. I use it mainly for PHP, but it has syntax highlighting for lots of languages (including HTML) and tag control (matching opening/closing tags).

I use win32pad, and highly recommend it - but not for everyone. For me, a lot of the 'features' of more advanced editors like code completion or syntax highlighting either slow me down or give me a headache (or both), tabbed editing is a step BACKWARDS when you have more than one monitor and know how to use a

Edit+, psPad, gEdit - all good programs though if working single display and need/want all those extras.

Just do yourself a favor and stay the hell away from ANY 'WYSIWYG' type editor like Frontpage or Dreamweaver. A LOT of people are going to hype Dreamweaver to you when it's fat bloated overpriced garbage that if you use the WYSIWYG part is just going to produce code the only thing you can learn from is how NOT to write a website, if you use the built in templates and methods the only thing you can learn is how NOT to code a website, and if you don't use any of that - congrats you spent a few hundred dollars for a overglorified notepad replacement.

I use Eclipse with the phpeclipse extension.

It's fully text based with syntax highlighting.

Thanks for all the input guys.

    Thanks for the overview.
I'm going to give it a try.

CoffeeCup all the way. They have a larger install base than Dreamweaver & Frontpage combined.

Try the free version, it has 95% of the features of the full version
