Look for keywords that you think ppl will search for?

When searching for keyword phrase. Do you look for phrases that you think ppl will search for? What if when you plug the exact phrase (in quotes) in google and there is no pages, do you skip the phrase all together?

What if there isn't any sites using that exact phrase in allinanchor and allintitle? Skip?

I'm still confused how I should go about looking for keywords! it's driving me nuts!

Anyone know of any guides that can answer my question? I've seen plenty of guides, but none of them specify anything about my above question.

Are there any guides that is step by step on figuring out which keywords are good and which ones aren't useful? I know things would be much easier if I had something like wordtracker or keyword discovery, but I'm kind of low on cash.

i am not sure how helpful this will be as i am no expert, i was never a pert to start with ;)

what i do, with sites that are already up and running is to look in the awstats logs (an access log tool) and see how people are finding my site. Another thing i look at is google webmaster tools.

Where it is a term i did not do anything for i then look to see how i rank on google, then look in DP's keyword tool to see if there are many searches for those keywords (or other phrases i could better use) and act accordingly. It is surprising how many i find where a simple change to the page will bring in another 200 or 300 visitors a month and with many pages that soon adds up. A change to one page found that way increased the site by 4000+ visitors per month by alternating the UK and USA spelling of a word on the page.

Another way is to just show friends your site and ask them to list what they would search for if looking for that type of site ?

As i say i am far from an expert but at least it is a starting point (if the site is already up) and i am sure others will have better ways.
