First coined writer by Chris Anderson in a seminal 2004 article in Wired Magazine , the Long Tail is a socio-statistical theory which suggests that the collective sales of products in low demand can exceed that of popular products and bestsellers.

Applying this theory to mass market retailers like Amazon , Anderson suggests that catering to minority tastes and making low-demand products consistently available will allow businesses to achieve higher profit margins, than if they were to solely focus on high-demand/popular products.

The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of “hits” (mainstream products and markets) at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail.

In the Internet Marketing sense and whats often discussed amongst Online Marketeers is the application of Long Tail Keywords and not the more General one word keyword. As an example take the genral keyword "detoxification" if you submit that in a query string on Google you'll see that it returns 8,880,000 web pages, way to general for niche marketing and lots of competition involved. Now if we use a long tail keyword phrase such as "fasting and detoxification" it returns only 173 web pages. So in a practical sense it's much easier to gain #1 in the SERP for the long tail phrase and it has a lot less competition.

    Hope that Helps
    Paul
