Long-tail products: unless they have a reliable affiliate program - forget it!

I've been trying to find a good niche to make my millions in... something with a decent margin (i.e. high price point) but not so competitive that the first page of the SERPS is full of PR9s.

I've found that working with long tail products has been frustrating. Very often, the retailers in that space that offer affiliate programs are either 1) poor converters due to sub-par sites or 2) lacking knowledge of how to provide the proper tools for their affiliates to be successful. Most can't afford the CJ retailer fees and I personally don't want to deal with 'proprietory' affiliate systems that may or may not accurately track sales.

Anyone else get this feeling? Maybe I need to try new niches... but I hate trying to build an affiliate campaign around a product that has only one somewhat-legitimate retailer outside of Amazon and Ebay.

I sometimes find it very hard to find the right affiliate for some of my websites. Depending on the niche, I just throw up Adsense ads instead of beating myself up trying to find the perfect affiliate. Some niches I can only make decent money using Adsense.

yep, the long tail often has a very short list of suitable affiliates. Adsense just seems to be the best in these situations. Although I just started I'm trialling Shoemoney's contextual ads to see how they convert.
