Although a longtail usually does consist of a phrase of 2 or more words, it actually refers to the phenomenon whereby if you add together all the searches for little-searched-for phrases in a niche (or to a site), it adds up to more than the results for the most popular. Therefore a longtail keyword is one that has in itself, little search volume, but if you use lots of them, added together, you can get more hits than if you tried to compete for a really popular keyword i.e if you target 20 longtails that get 2000 searches a month and get to the top of serps for each - that's something like 20 x 800 hits. Which is more useful to you than trying to target a more competitive term that gets 40000 searches a month, but you only get on the second page of serps for.
