Start with short general keywords for more results, from there dig deeper for more targeted longtail keywords.

when you are searching in google keyword external tool then search for short tail keywords, it will automatically suggest you long tail keywords if there are any. But all important if you are targeting some high competitive word then its better to have a long tailed keyword and keyword must be thought from the buyers point of view.

If your website is new and want to get some traffic immediately, try targeting long tail keywords, short keywords will take lot of time to rank due to the heavy competition.

You can use you short term keywords for your sites' shallow pages, since such short terms
    are broad terms.

Long tail keywords are best use to target for you sites' deep pages. Long tail keywords are specific ones making them long.

Short term keywords are more generic when it comes to traffic,
while long tail keywords are not. But they are more useful and generic when it comes to conversion.

Long tail keywords are the best.

For PPC they're usually cheaper, and for article marketing it's easier to get ranked. And of course less competition.

Don't worry too much about how many searches a month your keyword is getting. As long as it's relevant to what your visitor is looking for.

For a new website, long tail keywords are good as they have less competition. Switch to short keywords after sometime.

Definitely long tail keywords :) I'm into article marketing and before I learned how to use them my articles wouldn't get more than 1-2 visits a day. Now, using correctly long tail keywords I do so much better: even my most boring stuff get at least 30 visits daily.
I use Market Samurai and I'm totally happy with the results it fetches for me!

Firstly get high authority in long tailed keywords in SERP, then after you can target short phrases of high competition of same niche market.

Long tail keywords are known to convert well and since it's highly targeted the visitors are usually scarce. I look for websites within this niche, use spyfu and link assistant to build my own list.

When doing RESEARCH you build a big a list as possible, if you start your research using longtail keywords you're limiting your list.

Its actually depends on the competitions, but initially i would suggest to start targeting long tail keywords, as compared to short tails; long tails keywords are easy to target to achieve desired result in short time.

I think you use the long tail keywords, because the long tail keywords ranked easily in search engine.

If your site is for traffic, short tail keywords are more effective. You could also use keywords that have less competition.

While long tail keywords are more generic in conversion. .
Both are helpful, just know where to use it on your pages.
