long tail keywords in meta vs. automatic keyword generation scripts

Which do you feel is better for overall site SEO when creating keyword meta tags? Should I manually enter keywords and long tail keyword phrases or should I take the easy way and just let an automatic site plug-in create the meta tags for me (knowing that the plug-in will only create single word keywords based on their frequency in the article.

Which one is better in your opinion? I have used an SEO plug-in for years and it has made me lazy to the point that I never entered in my own keyword meta tags. Would it make a difference if I went in and manually switched them to one-three word phrases instead of individual keywords?

Meta tags haven't been used as a ranking factor by search engines for over two years now due to it getting heavily spammed/stuffed.

Category tagging would still be important, both for internal links and information architecture.
