Long tail keywords are keywords with more than 3 words in it. Though it might be easier to bring up a long tail keyword in the search results, it may not drive massive traffic to the site.

I disagree - the long tail of search can bring more traffic than 1-2 keyword combinations. For example i have a website which ranks well for a massive term - but the main keyword brings relatively low traffic (maybe 100 uv's per day)

However, from long tail keywords the site gets a further 600 + visits a day. Many of the search terms could be considered very low quality on their own - and you certainly would not discover them on keyword research tools (as volume too low)

So research your main keywords - then build around it to pick up on the long tail

Long tail keywords are good especially because usually they are lower competition and thus easier to rank. Short keywords usually have comptition in the millions and hard to rank for. But not impossiable just takes more off page seo aka backlinks.

i target a long tail keyword (3 words) and simulatneously target the parent niche (2 words preferably). But these 3 words must contain the 2 words of the parent. This is because i get better rankings for the longer but indirectly am pushing up the 2 words. To be fair it takes more effort for the 2 words phrase. I would not go for extremely long tail keywords (5 or more) because the traffic really falls!

Long tail keywords are usually keywords with 3 words or more in and have less competition.

To target long tail keywords in web site meta is beneficial because it will then show you the keywords that site has that will rank it among the top 20 in Google. One of the neat features of this site is that you can sort by the position, word tracker ranking, overture ranking and also the most recent keyword request.

I'm not too concerned with the long tail keywords. in essence, with good links and content that you can increase the ranking of sites.

More specific keywords are better than a general one-word keyword. Go for it!

No, there might not be a limitation but you would not want to increase it more than 4 words. You would get highly less searches and it would probably not worth the effort anyway. 3 word keywords are usually acceptable and are more than often used.
