It's impossible to say what works best for your site. I would suggest using all relevant keyword phrases, rather then classifying them long or short tail. Over time you will learn whta gets you traffic and what does not. Be sure you are tracking everything.

A HUGE amount more info is needed

    * How much SEO would you need to do to beat the competition?
    * How many searches are there?
    * Which is the better keyword for the website with regards buyers/users?

There is no specific answer to this imo

Generally short keywords are good because visitor don't prefer long tail keywords and second thing is that proper keyword research is most important apart of short and long tail keywords. Whenever you will use long tail keywords then either it will convert into short description or group of more then one keywords so try to use short keywords for proper optimization.

If you are targeting long tail keywords then you will get ranking earlier than short term keywords. So if your long term keyword contains the short term keyword also then you can also get the ranking for the same keyword after some time

I think short tail keywords are more useful for website because visitor does not search long tail keywords.

I am not feel comfortable with your question. I have not idea about your site and your theme. Yes keyword phase is most important in seo. If you want ROI then you should try large competitive keywords. Other wise you can stay with long phase keywords.

    Thanks

How on Earth does large keywords mean a better RoI than small ones? No offence meant, just confused how you can say you can't comment on it without details (a fair point) then you outright state the RoI is better on large competitive keywords? Surely RoI is VERY dependent on the details? RoI on micro niches can be huge compared to large keywords, and at much less risk

    Everything is about the details

The advantage to focusing on long tail keywords is that the competition for this keyword is not as high. So it will lead to much more traffic to your website from the search engines

Long tail keywords are best according to me, they are easy to target and they are less competitive.

I think there is no exact answer for this question.

Here's the abstract to help you see this.

    1. Short Tail Keyword --> It is means to collect all groups of users. Or we can call it as a "browsing stage"
We can give good examples like people who search an Air Conditioner ... they are don't have any idea, what kind of Air Conditioner they really want, they don't know what is the type, or what is the power usage for example, what is the pros and cons of the product, etc.

So can we can monetize our website, if ours in this level? I think better for you to use just like "Google Adsense".

    2. Long Tail Keywords --> When someone search in Google using the long tail keyword, for exampe Samsung 42 inch LN42XXXXX. They are already in buying stage, means that you can easily monetize your website just by put your affiliate link there.

So which one is better? hmm... We can't give you the exact answer, only you (you own your website) means you know better than us, what kind of end user do you target for your website.

    Hope this help...

I think it depends on your keywords. Example, the website ehow, most of keywords are "long-tail".

Long tail keywords usually have less competition and get ranked quicker.

I would say long tail keywords.
But then again it depends on your competition
Me i'm going for a keyword tat is two phrase
but has a competition under 200k so i would say it depends.

Long tailed keywords will have much less competition therefore it will be easy for you to rank for them quickly. Short tailed keywords have much larger competition therefore you would have to do more work in order to rank for them. Build links and links and links, oh and make sure that they come from high PR sites.
