long range wifi really fascinates me..like building mile links etc.. i recently stumbled upon this site..its just amazing the guy completely modded his truck so that it would catch up wifi networks from miles altogether.. wow just amazing look it out..btw This aint my site..coz ofcourse after seeing those google ads on the top u might be wondering...free publicity! lol.. its not that...i love such kind of projects..anyone with similar interests here? heres the link.. http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?showtopic=27919
Thanks for this link. Great insight but I'm looking to do something similar with my 15 passenger Chevy Express Van. My band tours the US a lot and we'd like to get satelite internet but that's about $3,500 for a system and dish. Implementing a long range WiFi signal is a cool alternative I didn't think about. This page was helpful but too general. Do you know of any resources with further instructions on this sort of thing? Thanks!
that is really crazy. that's quite a bit of money he put into that setup he's got going. and goodluck with your project deedo, i don't think that's something i could do lol
it isnt that difficult..if u need i cud help u... like i know this link was too general...but to get free wifi...u need an amplifier to boost the weak signals over huge distances..and a pc or laptop.. like the complete things are gonna cost you around 300$ rounded..but its one time...then yuou dont have to spend anything... this guy witht the trailer was rather a hobbyist and spent mostly a huge amount of money...
That would be awesome. We all have laptops in our band so the computers are taken care of. Our singer is an IT admin so she might be able to get a lot of the supplies, cables. But the amplifiers and stuff we'd have to buy. Could you help with a list of things needed to make this work for a passenger van? We're also planning on networking the van as well to share files. But we've got that part down. It's the boosting the wifi signal we've not done before. Thanks in advance, d
thats actually too naive unbore..i did a lot of study on those cantennas althought i must admit its quite effective nevertheless i would better spend those 45$ of cantenna.coms on a Hyperlink Professional Yagi...some insight..Hyperlink is and by far one of the most reknowned company for wireless equipment..and is also a supplier for the US military etc.. they have professional equipment..and not like what the cantenna.com selss i find it ridiculous that ppl spend 45 $ on it when for the same amount you can buy a hyperlinktech's wifi 14.5 dbi yagi! and the cantennacoms yagi is 12 dbi worth gain...
i'd be more than glad to help you out.. first of all i would make it clear that there is a trade off..although you do get free internet with a very low 300-400$ cheap expense the thing with wifi is if ure moving..i mean as in roaming in the city, then when u fall off out of range your wifi will disconnect.. also this disconnect issue is not limited to the fact that its out of range..even when sometimes you are in good range..for litttle or no reason the wireless network will disconnect.. if you and your ppl just wnat the internet for surfing cheking emails..and that kind of stuff..its easy..but if you want heavily reliable connection ..i'd doubt about that coz since you are roaming(or are u camped sometimes?) you wont be able to connect to any network all the time.. though through some modifications to wireless routers its possibnle to make it connect to the nearest possible wifi network... reply to this post and maybe then i could help you more with the list of items you need..
Yeah i'm aware of those set backs. It would be more for when we are stopped and in areas that have unsecured wifi signals. As far as budget, $300 sounds ok. but i'd be intested in the next level up from that if I decided to upgrade to get a better signal. But hey, any insight is helpful at this point. Preesh! d
well you cud buy a hyperlink 1 watt 802.11 b/g amplifier..and get LMR 400 cables and get it connected to a router or PCI card depending upon your needs..
