Long One Page Sales Letters?!

Discussion in 'Copywriting' started by robs132, Nov 30, 2008.

Is this really the best way to convert to sales?

They are such ugly pages and everyone knows how gross they are.

what are some other styles that have worked for people out there?

The ugly long letter are known to bring sales. There is a strategy behind these letters. They kind of stress you out to a point where you just want to make the sale and get over with it.
The longer you read the letter (most of them) the more you are convinced to buy.

One of my clients asked me to build him a website about "quit smoking" I built him this very nice website that all my friends loved, with great menu-bar great graphics and so and so. I was shocked when he asked me to change the whole thing to one of those long letters like you called them. I refused so he decided to go with another coder.

They work like anything works. Like people who keep buying new diet pills. If someone wants to believe something works, and you throw the right words at them, they'll buy. The long sales pages appeal to basest emotions and become almost hypnotic in their repetitiveness.

They work. They are ugly and usually full of lies....but they work.

They work, but not for all products and not for all markets. So no one can really answer your question - it depends on too many factors. While it might work to sell a get rich quick style e-book to an Average Joe that doesn't know any better, I can't imagine my PR colleagues spending thousands on a media database subscription based on similar sales materials. And remember, even if it "works" it doesn't mean it's the best bet. Something else might very well work better. If you're not testing different sales strategies, you're really not doing your job.

I thought the same thing about long sales letters, until I tried one and it worked. It could have been the targets. It could have been the products. I've had better success with long sales letters than short ones.

Some people can be convinced with just a few sentences. Others need to be coaxed into making a purchased. The long sales letter can tackle both, while the short sales letter leaves out a portion of your buyers.

Long letters are usually fit for pricey products. That's because you need to convince people more to part with their hard-earned money. You need to answer their questions, you need to eliminate all their objections about paying such an exorbitant price. At least that's the principle behind it. :)

Another thing that I observed that makes these long sales letters long is the amount of testimonials that come with the copy. They help reinforce the persuasion you're doing with your copy.

But in my opinion, it would help if you break it into several pages. That way, it wouldn't tire people into reading and scrolling a seemingly endless length of copy. Make it like a real-world long copy. Having a good layout along with a reasonable length of persuasive copy can go a long way.

Rhoula: You should have told your client that to get noticed is the primary aims of the page. If it looks like the other sales pages out there, it won't stand out and will only get a reputation as a scam page.

Long copy tells more and satisfies the concerns of a wider range
of people. Some folks are persuaded by social proof (testimonials)
because they are wired that way. Others just want the numbers.
Others want to know what creative things they can do with the
product. Some are very rational and want every little detail.

Long copy gives you the theoretical ability to appeal to all types
of decisionmakers. In practice most copy skews towards 1
    or 2 personality types.

I agree that long is better. It may be tacky, you may hate it, but it works. If someone is convinced early, they are going to scoll down to the buy it now, if they arent however you are giving them all the information you can to convince them to buy it. You have to keep dragging your point out over and over and over sometimes in order to convince someone to give you a try. It also gives them time to get excited as they read. Those who dont want to, arent going to read it if its short OR small, they are just going to skim. Longer is always a better bet in my opinion but there IS a fine line with long and just ridiculous. Make sure to break it up with headers and pictures!

    WOW!!!
I thought I was the only one who felt this way....

    It is tacky..... and LONG...
    ;-)

I think what is hard about IM is the more we get involved with IM we loss touch with what it is to be NORMAL.

NORMAL people do not know HTML, NORMAL people have never bought a domain name, NORMAL people use AOL FOR their email...

I'm 33 year old and 1 generation above me, and my own generation think if you have a My SP@CE page you are a Technology person. These are the folks that are our customers...

Anyway... I'm new to this stuff but the long page Sales page hurts me... but all the experts seem to use it. So until I can make a full time GIG at this IM stuff I'm just following the big dogs.

    :)

Today Gary Bencivenga put out a new "bullet" that tells
exactly why to use long copy - in a nutshell it's because
the people who are looking for a reason to get off the
fence and buy will read everything.

    Here it is:

    http://www.marketingbullets.com/bullet29.htm

Just something for you to chew on.

If you are selling ringtones or temporary tatoos don't bother
with long copy - but if you are selling info-products like
investment advice, well, long copy sells better with that
stuff as long as it's not boring.

30 million adult Americans are functionally illiterate - basically
they can't read - and the way to reach them is with TV and
    radio, not copy.

It still depends heavily on the market.

I gave this example in another thread (don't think it was this one) - look at the most popular media databases, and the folks in the PR industry who can spend a few grand a year on them (an info product). Long sales letter formats wouldn't work with the audience.

They may work in B-to-C, but they would not work as effectively in these B-to-B types of cases for large ticket products, where the target buyer is at the executive level, and where you can't just sucker them into big buying decisions, which they have to justify to others.

I know most folks here are probably in that B-to-C group, and that's fine. Long sales copy might work very well for you. But the OP needs to understand that there's no blanket answer as to whether long copy is better than short copy (and copy isn't the only sales tool out there - in the example above, you'll find that a lot of that is relatively short, followed up by a phone call).

You need to know what you're selling, who you're trying to sell to, what's going to encourage them to buy, and what's not. And the most important thing you can do is continue tweaking and testing - don't be satisfied just because you make some sales.

If you can do better by altering anything from the length to the color choices to the headings, you should do it.

We have all known that kid who just keeps asking "why?" And even though you keep giving legitimate answers he responds with "but why?"

This is what long sales letters address. The "buy now" button at the bottom is the "just because!" :)

Also, when you look at the actual text of these letters, un-bolded, un-uglified and you take out the graphics and the block quoted testimonials, the length of the text of these pages is actually a pretty reasonable undertaking.

Probably the stigma these long online letters have is their cookie-cutter layout that's associated with scams, although of course it isn't always the case.

The length of the copy also depends on the kind of action you want people to take. You don't need to have a lengthy sales page if what you're after is for the customers to ask for more information about the product.

As Jenn said, it depends on what the goal of your copy is.

It would be bad for anyone to think that one thing is the best for everything. And that just doesn't apply to the length of sales pages.

I should say that it all depends on what kind of product you're trying to promote. You see we don't need long sales letters if we want to sell TV or iPhone because people already have an idea about them.

Long letters will only work if the words being used satisfy one's unique need. Every word must count and bleeds with meaning and emotion.

There is no universal best way. It's all subjective.

Anyways post the letter here and maybe someone can give you relevant suggestions.

Now at last…. Here’s some GOOD NEWS for drivers wanting to get the edge! A book by peak performance specialists titled: ‘F1 Drivers Secrets’ discreetly guides you through the most effective techniques and strategies for massive race success and reveals…

“How to Become a Quicker Driver”

Get to pole position everytime using simple strategies and techniques

Discover the inside knowledge that the top drivers are using to achieve thier phenomenal results. These cutting edge techniques will slash seconds off your lap time.

Why do some drivers win no matter what car they are put in? What is the difference between P1 and the rest? How can you move from fluking it to winning consistently? If you want to be the fastest in your class and make a professional career out of racing, you’ve come to the right place.
Thank you very much for staying on this page. What I am about to tell you could change your racing life.

I’ve seen countless talented drivers not reach their potential because they failed to learn a few simple mind techniques and give the mind the respect it deserves.

Imagine showing up to the track next time dominating practice, qualifying and the race! Baffling your competition. Imagine if no-one knew how you did it. Imagine having your own secret weapon!

“I Just Want the Best Results!”

The thing is if you don’t answer some of these burning questions you won’t get the best results! If you don’t keep learning in regards to racing, the top guys will stay at the top and beat you! Or if you don’t stay at the top of the game you will start falling back through the field. Or worse you may never make it to the top and all that work, time, money and sacrifice will be for nothing. At no point in your racing career can you afford to stop learning!

The feeling of uncertainty that comes with being in a competitive sport can be immense so you want to make sure you are armed with the latest and best technology that will give you the edge over your competition – you can bet your competitors (or at least the guy at the head of the field) is constantly looking for ways to go faster, get better, stronger, fitter and get more knowledge.

There is a fantastic quote I came across that holds a lot of truth and keeps people from becoming complacent:

“Somewhere, someone is training and when you meet him he will beat you!”
    Anonymous

And that is it – there is no room for complacency at the top because the next guy is always breathing down your neck – whether he is training harder than you, got more money than you, access to better information, more talent or more passion he is there hunting you down constantly which means you need the tools to fight him off!

    Start to Believe!

You need to be able to access that belief in yourself, because if you don’t believe in yourself no one else will – and that means you miss out on the best teams, the best sponsors and the best cars.

A lot of drivers are turning to mind coaches to get them to the next level of their driving – with no expense spared. Lewis Hamilton had access to his very own neuroscientist that engineered his brain using the most amazing cutting edge mind techniques available.

Other drivers are now using these same mind coaches to get the edge. Usually they cost about £2000 a day and they are worth every penny, the amount of improvement that can be offered. However not everyone can get access to these mind coaches.

Your brain should be just as finely tuned as your car is. Would you get into a car without knowing how to use it properly or why it responds the way it does? NO! And if you did you wouldn’t win a race. So why do you think you can get away without knowing everything there is to know about your mind? I can educate you about the best way to turn your mind into a powerful weapon and propel you into massive success!

Turn Your Mind Into Your Strongest Weapon!

Now you can discreetly learn how to turn your mind into your most powerful weapon – the supercharged engine that drives both you and the car!
Wouldn’t it be nice to have the tools to help you to drive a track PERFECTLY and do as many practice laps as you choose without having to wait for practice sessions to open?

Wouldn’t it be nice to understand the exact way that your brain works in relation to driving your car?

Wouldn’t it be nice that once you have learnt how to use your brain you could then learn and remember things so much quicker and therefore massively improve your performance, results, sponsorship opportunities, more attention, more recognition, get more belief and more knowledge?

You would be able to digest that massive load of information that the team expects you to learn in such a small amount of time. The team has spent so long specialising in learning all the ins and outs of what it takes to be a racer – the car, how it works, everything – they expect you to learn that in 12 MONTHS!! We can help you with learning and digesting all the info and make you a better driver!

I have worked with many top drivers over the years and I know what works. But don’t take my word for it here are a couple of testimonials from drivers I’ve worked with in the past:

    Testimonial

“What Jason has taught he has taken me to a completely different level as a driver and massively altered the way I map and then drive a track. Just using a fraction of the stuff he has taught me has made the biggest difference to my lap times. I feel like a completely different, confident driver.”

    Daniel Ricciardo
    - 5th Italian Formula Renault Championship 2007
    - 5th Formula BMW World Final 2006

    Testimonial

“Before I met Jason I thought I had more or less got the big picture on what I needed to know in racing, it was just a matter of applying it in the right manner. After the last 7 weeks in which I have met him I have made the biggest step forward that not even I could have dreamed about. A breakthrough that I was much in need for had come. His way of explanation about secret topics which the very few drivers know about, come across extremely easy to learn. He has been literally the missing link which any racing driver needs. He’s so good; I still don’t know why I’m speaking the truth as I would have liked to keep this puppy a secret!”

“Thank you for your amazing support and words of encouragement this year. It was awesome to be able to achieve such a great result and win the coveted state championship (the first for Spirit Race Cars worldwide).

Once again, thank you for your support and advice. It has been an absolute dream come true. The experience I have gained and skills I have learnt will be invaluable next year.

Without the support of great people such as yourselves, success would be impossible to achieve. Thank you once again for your involvement this year; this success is as much yours as it is mine.”

If that's your main title, you actually lost me there. The main title really should make it clear who you're talking to. Who's your audience? What are they going to get out of it if they continue reading your copy? That would be the first thing I see I'm guessing, and it doesn't tell me that - so I'd leave.
