I like the long tail keyword strategy. That seems to work for myself and the people I know. I would rather have 5 people visit my site if they convert 50% of the time vs. having 100 people visit my site with 1% conversion.

Yes, start with long tail and then move to shorter and shorter keywords as you go.

    Example:

Start with: "tiny blue car sales"

    Then: "blue car sales"

    Finally: "car sales"

    Good Luck.

Just to clarify, you are saying that using long tail keyword phrases is easier as far as search engine optimization is concerned. Correct?

In that case I completley agree and using a KEI tool like wordtrackers would be the best option. Unless of course the optimizer owns a high PR domain.

This may be a bias opinoin, but I am partial to Google. It makes me a living. hehe

I just wrote this for another thread, but it seems that this would be a good place for it as well...

Be specific in your choice of keywords so that you will have less competition for them. However, you should try to keep the higher searched keywords in your "long tail" keyword choice.

Example of a keyword approach: (exact searches per month)

    tickets..............................25,000,000
    airline tickets......................2,300,000
    cheap airline tickets.............550,000
    find cheap airline tickets.......6,600

Now, you should target "find cheap airline tickets" as your keyword from the begining. Mostly because, the phrase would have less competition (normally), and it also contains each of the other key word phrases EXACTLY as well. This will be to your current and future advantage for ranking your keywords.

You will get a smaller amount of traffic at first, but those who benefit or like your site will "spread the word" and also link back to you. This will help you rank for the more competitive keyword phrases.

But keep in mind, by using the longtailed phrase that also contains the shorter keyword phrases, you are in essence, attempting to rank for all of those keywords individually.
