Logo software recommendations

I find that when I buy a domain name I'm always wrestling with what I'd like for a logo etc. I think I'd like to buy some "logo creation" software to see if that would help me become a bit more creative and quicker to get my domains up etc.

Can anyone recommend a good logo creation package out there? Thanks.

Depending on the quality of the logo and the amount of money you want to spend, you might try one of the template sites like monstertemplates or pixellogo. If you Google for "logo templates" you will come up with quite a few low cost alternatives to finding a logo.

For logo creation designers usually use a vector program. Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard, but if you want something for free try Inkscape.

I agree - go with a vector app so that you can scale up/down the image without changing its resolution. If you ever need to do printing (e.g. business cards, stationary, etc), you'll want to supply the printer with EPS or PS formats, both vector.

Of course you could also try out a logo-creation service company like Logoworks.com... YMMV.

    cheers

You can use The Gimp (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) would give you the link, but I don't have enough posts yet, but google for "the gimp" and it will show up it's free, but can be difficult to use.
You could also try serif.com as they often give away some of their older versions of smart draw etc. which are easy to use.
You might also want to look into buying a set of private label header graphics, I do 2 sets which can be edited in Photoshop (That's another great alternative to your software needs buy a cheap copy of adobe photoshop cs on ebay) anyone interested in the plr header sets, pm me for the links.

Also take a look at Corel PaintShopPro ... at $99, it's a less expensive alternative to Adobe PhotoShop, but very full featured! I give it two-thumbs-up :) (www.paintshoppro.com)

I agree to what everyone has said so far but if you aren't graphically inclined then it might be easier to find a forum local to create your works less headaches and by the time you spend 100 bucks on an app and then have to learn it you might as well have paid someone else to do it. If you want to learn it illustrator and photoshop are the way to go. but if you are on a budget then I agree with corel.

What about GIMP? It's open source, free, and I've heard great things about it. It's supposed to be about as good as Photoshop.

If you spend 100 bucks on an app and learn to use it you can create all the graphics you want, sure for one graphic it would be easier to get someone to do it, but at $50 (lowest I've seen for a good quality graphic, someone will say they know of a cheaper graphic artist, but quality will count of you're paying.) 2 or 3 graphics and your new app has paid for itself.

I just wrote a tutorial on using the free Inkscape to create a banner:

    http://www.publisherdatabase.com/tutorial.php/2031

I'm not an artist, so please don't look at my banner and think that it's an indication of how good or bad Inkscape is. Inkscape is great, I'm just an amateur.

You should also look at Ulead Cool 3D and 3d Studio. Both are pretty reasonable, and create vector, animation, and flash.

ULEAD Cool 3D is about $75 and then you can pick up some of the plugins for about $25 each.

    Colin,

I use a package called Corel Graphics Suite which includes an illustrator (Corel Draw) and paint program called Corel Photo Paint. The current version is pricey but you can get an older copy NIB for $20-$35 on ebay or by Google-ing...I use version 10 and love it.

There is always thelogocreator.com which will help you make decent looking logos yourself. It's no substitute for a professional's work but domain headers it's great!

Didn't Sodipodi die when most of the developers left to create Inkscape? According to the site, Sodipodi hasn't had a new release since November 2003.

Of course, the "owner" of the Sodipodi code still works on it, so I guess it's not really dead. It's just taking years & years for him to release a new version. Meanwhile, Inkscape has a great UI and great features, such as the blending/exclusion options for shape layers.

Of course, I could be talking out of my ass. I haven't installed a copy of Sodipodi since early 2004, I think. Maybe it has been updated and the site just doesn't reflect that.
