Logo is for branding your site. So logo should be the first preference and also do make a website design that suits your logo.

Website design is important first. Afterwards you can fit the logo according to the design.

I think you should definitely start with the logo. Once your logo is designed, you'll have a much better feel of what your website should look like, what you want to emphasize, what colors to use, etc. If you design your website first, you'll find yourself either limited in what you can do with your logo or you'll end up having to re-design your website to fit your logo.

I also think the logo should come first as it will be used for so much more than just the website. On many projects you will already be given a logo to create the site around ... might as well stick with that practice.

The logo should come before designing a website because the idea is to create a brand. You will want the log on your website as well as other marketing materials so that you have a consistent look. Your messages should also be consistent throughout your promotional materials. For instance, you should have a tag line that is on each and every piece of marketing material like brochures, websites and letterhead. Here is a great article on consistency in branding from Attitude Design: http://www.attitudedesign.co.uk/the-no-1-rule-brand-consistency/ and one from Bluespire Marketing: http://www.bluespiremarketing.com/blog/august-2012/4-ways-to-improve-consistency-in-your-branding.

Attitude design mentions that using a logo consistently is not enough and that your messaging must also be consistent. Inspire marketing recommends doing a brand audit once you have completed creating your materials. The audit will help you figure out whether your brand is consistent across all materials and communications.

    Hope this helps,

    Shawn

Well, Now a day if we consider Microsoft then they have recently launched logo for their website. So, its like you can have your website with the simple name of your company and later on whenever you feel like having a logo then go for it.

Hi there, we design many websites and we would always recommend designing your logo first and then your website - as chances are you're going to make the design of your website similar to the logo and use same colours etc. Good luck with your new business adventure!

Since a logo represents a company so if someone is planning to design the company's website then logo should be the first thing to design

This is the chicken or the egg question.

I would say do both together! Before you start designing either the logo or website itself you need to write down what the aims of your website are, who you want as your audience, etc. Once you know what you want the website to be (and do) then give that definition to both your graphic designer and web designer at the same time.

If the website needs a temporary logo then use a simple graphics package (i.e. Paint for windows) to create something (anything) and then once the logo is done you can place it in the website and create the favicon and other bits as well.
