There is a new site that talented logo designers should check out. IncSpring is a place where designers can sell unused concepts and new ideas.

I think REAL designers should value their work and charge the highest prices as they can. A professional designer is not like someone who just knows how to mess around the softwares. If somebody asks who made your logo, you would be able to say it was made by a professional designer. Not "I don't know, I bought it for $5, or uhh who cares who made it". Hiring a real professional aggregates value to the image of your business. That is why if you take your business seriously you shouldn't charge someone who doesn't really know what they're doing, like adding RANDOM colors or effects on a picture. A logo is the most important visual identity of a company. Whenever you see it, you're able to tell which company it's from. Strong like that. I don't think nike, coke and other popular trademarks would sell their logo for $5. Their images would go downhill. THAT is how much a logo is worth.

1st - it was back in 1971 with completely different dollar value.
2nd - the designer was given "a gold Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike stock"* afterwards.

    *) after Wikipedia

Well back then Nike was just getting started too. So it didn't really matter what they used for the logo. Not that this was a bad design but
I think the logo only became recognized more and more as Nike became a well known company. Because this company makes great shoes and they are known around the world so is their logo known around the world.
If the company was no good then probably no none would care about their logo. I think they go hand in hand.

A4hire - agreed. This is the way people judge logos sometimes: big company = good logo. Which is not always true :)

I have to agree with a4hire & varelse on the latest posts....

It seems that a majority (around 80%) of my logo clients that provide samples of logo's they like, tend to be large corporations with million dollar marketing / advertising campaigns. Huge corporate conglomerates that have saturated the consumer with ads & freebies branded with their company logo & name, thus causing a psychological memory effect (Repeat, Repeat, Repeat, Remembered).

Because the logo is remembered it's automatically assumed to be in style & a reason for a companies success! This is where the Not true part comes into play. It's not the logo that made the company, but the company's products / services / customer support / public relations that made the logo. One can have a logo just starting out that everyone looks at & says, man, you paid for that? it's terrible :( ..... Yet 1-2 years later, same logo, same company, difference is the company hit the right niche & is now a fortune 500 corporation, people start saying, WOW, nice logo, sweet, That's all you paid for it? I want one too :)

Funny how things work out that way.... A famous saying is: Crazy is measured Merely by the level of ones own success!

Just my 2 cents on all this :)

I don't think so, $500-800 are common price for medium company logo in offline market.

Btw interesting thread, I remember what JSB Morse said about logo :

A great logo must follow basic design principles
A great logo must be functional
A great logo must represent the company
A great logo must be unique

    It based on the company

    - home based/small/startup company $600 logo : expensive
    - medium company $600 logo : common price
    - large company $600 logo : cheap
