I design everything I do in Photoshop, even the stuff my clients need in vectors(yes, you can do it in photoshop). I'd recommend Photoshop because it's easy to use and it's FUN to use. Illustrator is the program you SHOULD use and learn but I find it VERY complicated and boring. I think it's because I'm used to Photoshop but I just can't understand why Adobe made Illustrator so damn messy and complicated. Good luck!

There is an article discussing a great and easy way to create logos on AmericanInventorSpot.com. It's at AmericanInventorSpot.com and its titled Professional Logo Creation Made Easy. I cannot link to it as I am new and it seems I cannot even give a web address? It mentions the limitations and difficulties of Photoshop and suggests a new alternative software called the Logo Creator. Maybe someone can help out by taking a look at the article and creating a link for folks if they are interested. It's a good article.
