Logging out of Google account while checking ranking?

I thought you were supposed to log out of your Google account before doing a search?

When I'm logged out I see my domain at #1 which is great, but when I'm logged in I'm not in the first half dozen pages (maybe more I stopped).

    Thanks

Yeah that's what I thought, but shouldn't logging out of your account first give you the correct results. The numbers website traffic doesn't reflect this though. Anyway thanks for the link.

Logging out first should give you different results however google does just cookies/tracking codes and thus your results may be slightly skewed. What I do is simply use a different web browser that I don't use with my google accounts. For complete serp results I find that http://www.seoserp.com/web_tools/google_top_1000_serps_checker.asp is the most accurate and gives top 1000 tracking

You will see different results when logged in and out due to Google "personalizing" your search results.

You could always use FireFox SEO addon: Rank Checker. This helps eliminate results that you have personally clicked on, but keep in mind different data centers will return slightly different results.

Thanks guys. I have MarketSamurai for my own sites, but this means all the research I've been doing has been flawed :(

I just took it for granted that since I was logged out that it was okay. Gonna have to rethink this.

    Thanks

Yes, checking your ranking of keywords while logged in Google, affect your ranking in search engine result pages. When the same thing is searched during your login period, Google make it as a space for personalized search and when you check, it show you only good positions in the search result pages. Your search is actually based on various search factors. So it happens.

Another thing you can do is use a different browser. I'm on a mac, use firefox for most my seo work, and will use safari/Chrome to do various searches.

Try to check if Google personalization is disabled. Personalization affects google rankings so it must be always disabled.
