Locking directories from people with site rippers?

    Hi guys,

How do you lock folders from site ripping software?

I checked one of my sites, and if someone wanted, they could download all the images off there.

I have looked on some peoples, and the directories have "little locks" to stop people downloading (and seeing?) the content.

Any ideas? the content would still need to be accessed though php pages.

    Cheers.

Well... if the "rippers" know anything, you won't be able to tell it's a PHP script - at all. PHP can be made to act like a real web browser (I've done it) without too much trouble.

I'm not aware of a way to kill bots except for CAPTCHA, but it sounds like that wouldn't work for your site.

nah, sorry mate, thats not what i mean.

A site ripper lets you look though peoples sites using a windows program. You can see everything, hidden directories, files, anything.

If you go to most peoples websites, you can just download the entire website.

If you go to rip a porn site, the folders that contain the images are locked, you cannot download them

I want to achive somthing like this on my sites.

Any info on how to do that would be great.

    Cheers.

You can use .htaccess files to disable directory file listings.

You can block some with .htaccess, but for more precise blocking you need Crawlwall, a new product coming out.
