Lock ancient threads

I don't know if this would be possible, but could there be some way of preventing people posting on very old threads?

It's been occurring more and more often and it can be very irritating

I dunno... I prefer longer threads to redundant threads.

I don't mind long threads. The problem as Fryman indicated is when people bump threads that are over a year old, and not even relevant anymore.

Perhaps a better solution would be to have some kind of warning message stating: This thread is x months old, Are you sure you want to post here?

That might stop people from unknowingly reviving dead threads.

That would be a cool feature for a forum. I don't think I've seen it anywhere. I'm sure some (newbies and otherwise) land in a thread from a search and get into the subject without checking the date.

Damn! From the title, I thought this was going to be a discussion about bellbottoms, paisley, and Nehru shirts  :D

I think it's called "pruning" or "archiving".

Another way to discourage people reviving old threads is just to red rep them to death when they do it... that'll larn 'em.

Yeah, but it doesn't solve the problem of everyone else posting again on a thread that is one year old

Some of those old threats are great with content still important and valid today :)

It should be possible to write a script that automatically closes threads after a certain period of time. It's quite possible that a script like this is already written. I'd check vBulletin.org ;)

I know phpBB has a "pruning" feature where you can set time to close and archive threads on a per forum basis, though I've never used that feature.

    That's an excellent solution!

Seems a bit harsh to red-rep someone just because they accidently bumped an ancient thread. At least you'd know they'd done it deliberately if a little pop-up box told them it was dust.

I meant that suggestion sarcastically. I am going to have to go back to using the maximum allowable human dose of smilies, I think... according to Seinfeld, that's determined by discovering the dose that will kill a human being and then backing it off just s smidgen.

What ever happened to AC - I haven't seen him post in quite a while..
As for dated threads - it's a little difficult I think, because some of them have really relevant info - while others are just dross.

Oh well - here's my dose :) any more than that and my face cracks..

    Cheers,

    JL
