I live in Knoxville and whenever my map comes up with my network location, it never shows me in Knoxville. From the three places I connect from, one shows Missouri, one shows Illinois, and one shows Kingsport, TN. It's easy to find out where your IP address says you are. Go to maps.live.com and hit the "locate me" link. Is it accurate?

I was curious, what percent of these are actually accurate.

Does IP location tools show your correct location? You don't have to state where you are, but I'd like to know how accurate it is for you. Let's see if we can come up with a percentage.

    Edit: Here's another tool: ip2location.com

It's quite accurate for mine... down to the ISP provider. I'm sure they can't always be 100% correct :p

Maps.Live.com shows me in Denver, Colorado ... but I have an IP geo-location tool that uses the free MaxMind database. They update it monthly ... and now it shows me in Louisville instead of Boulder, Colorado ... which is actually physically closer ... both of which are closer.

It says I'm in Chicago, instead of Denver (where I am today). But it was right about me being at the Hyatt.

You're pretty close, but if I'm a dry cleaner in Denver and I show you my Google ad, based on your Denver IP, you're far enough away that you are not going to drive to my business to use my service. If I'm that dry cleaner, you might as well be in Alaska.

ip2location shows me in Westminster ... which is actually slightly farther away from my actual location than the (free) MaxMind Database which shows me in Louisville - surprised by this.

Good points on the Dry Cleaners/local merchants need very accurate geo-location.
