I'm trying to generate local web traffic to a local landscaping company in my area. His site is 3 years old and has little SEO work done to it. Here is my question, he has a city name in the URL that they want most of there business. However, he would like to get customers in the surrounding cities.

Should I put these city names in the description? Or should I make seperate link pages with the city name in them? I'm also leaving anchor text with other cities names in them on blogs & forums.

    What do you suggest?

The first thing you need to do is get your client listed in the Google Local Business results: http://www.google.com/local/add/lookup?welcome=false&hl=en-US&gl=US

This will allow Google to serve up location based info instead of you having to rely on it.

Then, if it's traffic you want, I'd get your client listed on CraigsList ASAP. This will get him traffic and keep him happy with you that his investment is paying off.

trust me. People search craigslist for local services like landscpaing more than you could imagine.

I would find other local directory type sites, and make sure to focus on the biggest city in the area for SEO purposes (ex: if Your client is in a small suburb, focus on the metro area for keywords)

Again... if you got a contract with a customer for SEO, chances are they don't give a rats ass about where they're listed, they want business. Since you don't have 100% control over where Google puts you... work outside of google for now to send leads to your client.

and most of all..... good luck ;)

Put local areas names along with the keyword "landscaping" in the footer of the website. Like "Area1 landscaping" link and it points to some other about us page in the same website. Then get listed on local business directories like localeze superpages yellowpages and kudzu etc. Concentrate on classifieds sites like backpage craigalist etc.
