Local Forums, do they work?

Has anybody had any experience with local forums? Do they work well? Something for locals to get on, talk about new things in the community, have a welcome wagon thing, as well as restaurant reviews, gossip, that kind of thing?

I'm not exactly in the midst of any giant cities, but am within an hour or so from two major cities. Local papers within the circle I would be marketing to have a total distribution of around 1.2-1.5 million per day

Eventually I'd like it to be nearly 100% automated, but am willing to work for a good deal of time on it. I'm not really worried that much about how much money I make, but I do want it to be a profitable venture, maybe around $100/month or so? Possibly adsense, or affiliate sales, maybe even some local sponsorships?

    Any suggestions, or experience?

    Thanks!

I have tried this several time and its work like charm.
But its not 100% automatic,it involve a lot of work such as posting at major local forum and post it up at classified. You should begin with posting at your local forum to create buzz about the product you sell.
Then you start to give out some review copy to the forum member.
