Hey Everyone, I am new here and I figured that I would ask some questions that have been on my mind for a while. I am trying to get everyones opinions on the Pros/Cons of Local Domain Names Vs. 1 National Domain Name when dealing with a Classifieds/Profile based website. In your opinion would it be better to have 1 domain name that can be used in a 'National' setting or would it be better to have multiple 'Local' domain names that are specific to each State and/or Cities? For example: CreativeNationalDomainName.Com CaliforniaLocalWebsite.Com NewYorkLocalWebsite.Com FloridaLocalWebsite.Com Both types would contain the exact same information, categories, etc. but the major difference would be that on the 'National' website you would first go to the National domain name and then select your State/City. (Like Craigslist.Com) On the 'Local' websites you could browse the whole state or select your specific city as needed. (Local Websites would contain a Drop Down box linking all of the sites together. You could go to the drop down box and select a different State/Area which would take you to that website. Also, registration on one of the websites would allow you to login to all of the websites. You only have to register once.) Here are some of the Pros/Cons that I see: National Website Pros: - You can market the domain name to everyone. No need to worry about marketing to a specific area of people. - There is only 1 domain name to remember. - If you grow quickly your site can become very popular and well known. Cons: - No Local feel. - When dealing with Classifieds such as Real Estate, Autos, etc. People don't tend to list these items as much on National websites. If might just be me, but I would never list a Fridge, Couch, Bed, etc. on eBay. Most other items such as Real Estate & Cars sell better locally. Local Websites Pros: - Marketing. Using local domain names with the State or City name in it will grab peoples attention. Would you be more likely to use Classifieds.Com or YourStateNameClassifieds.Com when looking for Real Estate, Autos, Furniture, etc. - People are more likely to advertise their homes, cars, boats, furniture, etc. on a local level where these purchases are usually made. - Very easy to market in your own state with Flyers, Local Billboards, Word of Mouth, and things like this. It may be easy to market in surrounding states as well. Cons: - Your marketing is limited to each state. - Because you will be using mulitple domain names specific to each State/location you will have to start your marketing all over again each time a new state/location is started. Example: If you have 5,000 users on a national site and more people sign up from different states that is perfectly ok. If you have 5,000 users on CaliforniaLocalWebsite.Com and you start advertising for NewYorkLocalWebsite.Com you will end up having to start all over with 0 users in that new state/location. I hope you get the overall picture of what I am talking about. I think there are some great Pros/Cons to each type of setup, but I am sure that I have overlooked many that are very important. Please let me know your feedback/suggestions/ideas. Thanks, BCBC
