    Title says it all:
Local Designers Vs Designers From DP Huge Price differences....

Today I was talking to my neighbor and she said that a person she attended college with in the field.of Graphic Design. Was paid $50,000 Thats Fifty-Thousand Dollars To design some logo that looks like crap from what I heard.

I just cant believe it, Why is the price difference such a huge factor here on the internet I mean charging so low here ruins businesses for local Designers who would normally make thousands of dollars off of simple projects.

$5 logo's on DigltaPoint Vs. $50,000 logo with way worse outcome

I guess my 2 cents are, charging so little for design work ruins the scale for designers looking to make more money, the competition is just ridiculous... anyone else agree?

Probably a lie but not impossible.
Most of the people on this board are kids and space cadets that would be grateful for $5. In the real world, you don't get kids off the street to do your design work. And don't dig up some "one off" where it happened. Yes, it happens, but don't count on it.

Yeah I realize that aspect of it, just its bad enough how the world economy is now, but this will ruin the business for almost any legit person trying to make a career of his/her designs.

Yes this is very much true.

Many of the persons who dont have work do it for 5$ also.
But its quite obvious you cannot match the quality with professionals.
Still this practice of amateurs is effecting business a lot. Good designers are not getting good amount in return of the services they provide.

No it won't. Even professionals do work cheap/free to get started. When I first got into the web stuff, I approached a small business and offered to redo their web site for free just to build up my portfolio. I'd never do that now and would charge thousands to do the same thing for anyone else.

The only people who would use something off the street are those who would not or could not pay the going rate in the first place.

Design contests and sites like DP offering cheap design work does devalue design.

Good design and effective communication cannot be achieved by using a few photoshop filters. It takes alot of practice, knowledge and creative talent and doesn't come with a $10 price tag (in most instances)

I am a final year graphic design and digital media student who has joined this board to learn more about web development and internet marketing but to also offer my design services while I complete my studies. I am charging a fraction of what I charge regularly to clients 'in the real world' but due to lack of work in my field I have to take on these small paying projects to get the money I need.

damned if ya do, damned if ya dont!

As others have said, a lot of the designers on here are young people or people with primary jobs who design for hobby/side earner, and arn't infact making a full time career out of it. You've also got to consider that a lot of design companies employ multiple people, and have overheads to pay, rather than working from home on their own.

But yes, often you'll see that local designers/web developers are paid large amounts of money for much lower quality of work, because regular clients aren't aware of sites like DP, and just want a simple and easy way of getting the job done.

Hmm, yeh i agree with nmx, large companies dont really see big forums who do these logos for nothing basically or do it out of fun :)

That makes no sense at all. Clients sign off on this work so they knew what they were paying for and got what they asked for.

Also, no way on this green earth would I even consider coming to DP looking for graphic work and neither would anyone else I know. There are tons of local people to choose from and I picked three. I wouldn't disrespect them by paying them $5 for anything they did.

well, if you think you're really good in designing and you deserve a pretty big compensation, then don't just settle with online offers that gives cheaper salaries in return. Look for a better option and seek for the right job that deserves your talent and hard work :D

you get what you pay for, and as for the logo looking bad - that's only the clients fault.

A client who isn't pleased with the design has the right to ask for it changed. If the deisgned is the one who is saying it looked bad that means the client was THRILLED with it, but didn't give them creative freedom. But, who would turn down 50,000 willing dollars to do a design you didn't like, simply because you didn't like it when you had the skills to carry out the work needed?

A logo "looking like crap" is a matter of opinion anyway. If someone really did get paid that amount for a logo there should have been a lot of research invloved into company image, what they think will work best to attract the type of customers they want to attract. Ususally the people who say a design 'looks like crap' are totally clueless, it's the same with people who don't 'get' prize winners in art competitions because to them it just looks like a pile of bricks or a lump of metal, they don't get it because they can't see the bigger picture or meaning behind it.

As for DP devaluing designers, utter tosh. People who run non IT/web dev type businesses don't log on to websites like DP, or any other kind of forums usually, looking for designers. They look for local companies they can speak to face to face. Hell, I don't use people on DP for serious work for my clients - I couldn't trust that it hadn't been ripped off from somewhere else, so I only use Dp for my own sites' stuff sometimes.

Come on, though a lot of the local designers dont have much experience with other work other than the local business they get and the other way around.

If the company who paid $50,000 for that logo, who have looked on DP they would have seen that (I don't mean to be racists but its fact....) Indians would have done it for nearly 95% cheaper... It just ruins the economy not only in America but also around the world, people wonder why we (not only America but Canada and a lot of European countries) are in the dumps is because all the other countries are getting our work done cheaper.

But I do think that a structured background history of a designers as well a as college educated person, that would im sure affect the dramatic difference in money and income he/she makes.

that guy is gonna be banned soon^

anyway, a lot of you have made good points and I think the most obvious reason for the price difference in real world and on DP is the fact that people that are able to get online and register for message boards have a lot more internet/computer knowledge than a business owner who wants a professional logo designed. Plus, the face to face communication and business relationship make it easier to charge a higher fee. That's more time traveling and working on a design, instead of sending the logo real quick over email.

And that doesn't mean that designers on DP are better than real world designers. I prefer to get my clients in the real world.

    And what's wrong with that?
Well, no, it doesn't work like that. Things shift and move around all the time. Once one area becomes a commodity, it gets shifted to those who will do it cheaper while the originator moves on to more complex, unsolved problems which cost more to produce.

Absolutely false. As stated above, no way would I hired anyone off of a message board, most of all from DP.
    That makes no sense.
I do that with my business all the time. Rarely do I go visit with my people except to be sociable. The pay's the same.

Well how the Hell is some guy in India, or Hungary, or Britian, or France etcetera going to have a clue about the market needs and brand awareness of a fruit and vegetable wholesaler in Raritan Maryland, for instance. They don't want to pay some teenager in Ulaan Bator altering logos from PLR packs, they want someone who knows wtf they are doing in terms of their business in their town or city, unless they couldn't care less about their logo and it isn't something they plan to use for decades on stationary and vehicles of course - in that case, by all means go for cheap.
