Live Seo Experiment - Starts 1st March 2013

Hi all !

We were planning this experiment for quite some time and are about to get started with it. We thought it would be great if we can share it with fellow DPins and all other people, who are new to online promotion and SEO or are interested in it, so that we can get mutually benefited.

To make things clear, we are not SEO gurus in anyways. We are a group of enthusiasts, who like to explore and learn and this experiment is the result of the same. We would like to share all that we have learned till now about online marketing and SEO and it would be great to get feedback and any other creative input from anyone who is interested in it.

Here are the briefs of the experiment:

Targets:

1. To create a brand new website and then drive targeted traffic to it and gradually try to achieve (and thereafter maintain) and Alexa on or about 100 K within 6 months.

2. To create a brand new website and the gradually monetize it to make near or about $ 2 k/ month on a regular basis (within 6 months )

3. To share online promotion and SEO ideas with enthusiasts like us and get mutually benefited by it.

Duration : 6 months (appx.)

We will also make some video tutorials so that a newbie can learn online promotion and SEO from scratch. If someone wants, he/she can also do a parallel experiment with us on his own site.

Here is the list of video tutorials that we will work on:

1. Selecting a niche and setting up targets.
2. Registering a domain
3. Setting up hosting on a domain
4. Setting up a website and tips on a SEO friendly website.
5. Adding content on site & importance of quality content.
6. Initial SEO and an introduction to SEO tools.
7. Tracking the traffic through Google analytic.
8. How to monetize a site - ways of earning though a site.
9. Ways of promoting a site part 1 - link building (forums, blogs, bum marketing etc)
10. Ways of promoting a site part 2 - social networking - FB, Twitter, Linked In etc)
11. Ways of promoting a site part 3 - Video Marketing.
12. Ways of promoting a site part 4 - Building a brand of a product or a service.
13. Ways of promoting a site part 5 - How to attain top 10 ranking for a keyword on Google.
14. Monetizing a website
15. Tracking the results and improvising accordingly.
16. Conclusion

This list is yet to be finalized. So, if any of you have any ideas to add, pls feel free to suggest and we shall edit the list accordingly.

I want to know about bum marketing, as you have mention. What is this kindly explain here..

 

Bum marketing, simply means article writing done in in bulk. This mainly involves following steps:

1. Selecting a niche and keywords to target.
2. Writing lotsa articles on above.
3. Submitting it to top article directories like ezinearticles, hubpages, squidoo etc.

This, when done in bulk and on a regular basis, can rank your articles on Google (and other SE) for some good keywords, resulting in targeted traffic. Bum marketing is particularly useful for promoting affiliate products. These articles serves as good pre landing pages. Apart from it, any interesting and useful article, submitted on Internet, weather written under bum marketing campaign or not, would help in building up good reputation of your website.

Can you please explain on selecting and setting up niche targets to earn online

@ steve - Niche = covering and targeting a specific area of a topic.

For example,
If Health is the main topic,
Health ---> weight loss could be a niche.
An even better niche could be Health --> weight loss ---> for working women.
It could even be something like Health --> weight loss --> weight loss for working women---> weight loss for working women in US -> NY ... and so on.

In above example, SEO and promotional strategy will vary as per the selected niche.

In general niche under finance, health etc. would be more profitable then the ones in entertainment (movies, music etc). That being said, anything done in the right way will earn rich dividends in a long run.

Quick bit of advice though- forget about Alexa. The ranking means absolutely nothing, and holds no value.

@ webdev - We aren't big fan of Alexa either ! Its just that things like Alexa and PR are good for branding a website, its good to keep a track on progress of a site from no where to 100 k Alexa and PR of 3/4 ... that keeps people interested, noting more Thanks for the input!

@ nany - Ranking a keyword primarily depends on the overall quantity and quality of back links associated with the main domain and the page which you are trying to rank. Apart from it factors like age of domain, PR, PA/ DA, nature of competition etc always affects ranking. We will discuss this as we move ahead.

Thanks for this list but as you've said, List of video tutorials. I can;t find any. I would like to know guys asking based on your opinions and the steps mentioned. I want to be the part of discussion as it goes and discover the facts. As far as I know, Quality of Content is what people or Google cares now a days and regular updates on the page/domain bring the exposure of it.

Hope subscription to this thread brings some one line me a knowledge of new strategies of 2013 SEO and experts. Thanks

Update :

We have slightly revised the experiment to make it more comprehensive. Now, we will be working on three sites simultaneously - a blog, a forum and a general website. This will help the us in understanding seo and online promotion methods for each of them separately. (ideally a website should have both blog and forum!)

I would like to add something here. You could also benefit from using Infographics. They are a nice way to get some traffic as most people will enjoy reading from an image, rather than just text.
